Metabolic Syndrome (SM) is associated with subsequent diabetes and cardiovascular events.An overproduction of cytokines could be involved in the onset of early inflammation state in MS and cardiovascular disease.The 174G/C SNP of IL-6 has been related with elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in humans and could represent a marker to identify individuals at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. We examined if the -174 G/C IL-6 genetic polymorphism is associated with MS ocurrence in a cohort of hypertensive patients.
